MTV to Launch Nations First Gay TV Network- why?

I figured it's bound to happen but it seems closer than I thought.
Seems Viacom's MTV and Showtime discussing to launch this year. I guess my question is why? When I view nightly programming, in nearly every series I came across there are already is one or more gay characters. Some shows are already built around this lifestyle, like 5 gays helping a straight slob. So what is the big deal?

TV Guide quoted media stock analyst Tom Wolzien of Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. as saying, "It's about time somebody had gone after that audience with a [cable] network. ... It's an important segment of the audience that has traditionally been under-served. The money is certainly there to support it."
Article found here.

Say what? Disney has gay days, Rosie Odonnell is creating an all gay cruise. All in the attempt to tap into this supposedly reservoir of money. No I think it's more than that. Since the media outlet, tv in general are already pushing the lifestyle containing 2 percent of our nations population, I really don't see a need for it. Already it's bringing controversy, which I suspect is the primary reason they mention it. 'Will this fly?'

Since Orielly generally blasts MTV for their degrading music this cannot help their PR. Many believe MTV has lost its true touch since the 80's when they went to reality tv and games. Showtime already hosts a number of 'gay' shows including, Queer as folk, The L word. So it's not really surprising.

Family advocacy groups are already putting in place a means to speak out about this.

AFA a constituent of Family values has a poll concerning this already.

" MTV — the network which brought us the infamous
Super Bowl halftime show — has announced that they are beginning a cable TV network to push the homosexual agenda. The new network will be supported by advertising and will be offered as part of the "basic" package of cable networks"

I also recommend you to check out Traditional Values Coalition that has some good articles, ect.

i doubt this will happen. when i was in school we discussed how cable companies select their 'basic' programming stations and it depends heavily on the demographics of the community the cable company is based. there are so many networks in existance that a station focusing on gay people isn't going to be much more than a tiny blip on the radar. sure, it will be huge in San Francisco, or Miami or NYC, but my guess is 80% of the US will never even see this.

at my job, we are launching an 'all asian' network showing movies, news, music videos, & anime from asia. when they showed up talking about this station i thought it was crazy, but after watching it for a week, it's actually pretty cool.

i do think mtv has gone down the tubes since they quit playing music videos. or when they do play music it's rap and little teenage girls. they lost their focus and are trying too hard to be a catalyst of pop culture instead of reflecting the culture that already exists.

anyway...it seems like broadcasting is becoming more and more targeted everyday. just wait for the left-handed network or the blondes superstation...

RE Lamkins: That was quoted from the AFA website, hence the quotes. But 'the homosexual agenda' usually is identified as a group of activist attempting to push their lifestyle or ideology upon the whole by any means possible. Most see this through the media and Education system, ect.

Note the quote below is from the Link.

"According to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), at least three Democratic senators have pledged to block any legislation proposing to amend the U.S. Constitution to prohibit recognition of same-sex unions. In a mid-May press release, NGLTF said Senators Barbara Boxer of California, Chuck Schumer of New York, and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan met with leaders of the "gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans-gender community," during which the lawmakers reaffirmed the "solidity of support" against a Federal Marriage Amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman."

RE Lauri: Yeah, I dont really think this will fly either. I may be wrong but I agree, if they do, it will be for a minute part of the whole. Guess we will see.
